Abstract

This study probes the state of Filipino gay virtual communities. Filipino gay have built virtual communities that fill a void caused by their marginalization in the real world. These virtual communities provide an alternative to the mainstream media as a source of diversion and information, as well as a venue for social interaction and personal identification. Even if the promise of new technologies for social change has historically been co-opted by prevailing social systems and even if the tenor of the discourse in these communities is very personal, these communities exhibit the potential for forging the ties that will bind the Filipino gays, on and offline, in their struggle for achieving liberty and pursuing human rights.
