The Role of Representation, Relation, and Identity in Reinforcing Local Wisdom Values in Indonesian Television Documentaries
Article
The Indonesia Bagus television documentary program is a form of media that consistently showcases the diversity of Indonesian local culture, including in the episode “Bromo,” which explores the life of the Tengger tribe on the slopes of Mount Bromo (Aderia & Yosiie Marlia, 2014). The phenomenon underlying this research is the challenge of the media in presenting authentic local cultural narratives without falling into tokenism or mere symbolic representation. This study aims to analyze how local wisdom values are represented in documentary programs through representation, relationships, and identity. The research uses a qualitative approach with multimodal analysis methods, including iconographic analysis, visual mode (attribute, setting, salience), and audio mode (narration, background sound, film judgment). The results show that producers position local speakers as the center of cultural representation through language styles, visual attributes, and narrative relationships that strengthen the local identity of the Tengger people. The representation of local wisdom becomes a narrative element, fostering an emotional and educational connection with the audience. In conclusion, this documentary succeeds in showing local values as part of the national narrative, with an inclusive production approach oriented towards cultural preservation.

Bridging the Gap: Designing a Contextual Data Journalism Curriculum for Indonesian Media Education
Article
Abstract
This study addresses the growing demand for data journalism education in Indonesia, where the integration of data-driven practices into journalism curricula remains fragmented and underdeveloped. The research aims to identify key gaps in the instructional design, content, and pedagogical approaches related to data journalism, with particular attention to the contextual challenges faced by journalism educators, students, and practitioners. Employing a qualitative exploratory approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with journalists and educators, focus group discussions with key stakeholders, and document analysis of accredited journalism programs. The findings reveal systemic shortcomings across all stages of the data journalism workflow, including limited access to usable data, lack of training in data cleaning and analysis, weak narrative construction, and minimal engagement with visualization tools. These gaps are compounded by institutional constraints and cultural perceptions that marginalize technical competencies in journalism education. The study contributes to the theoretical discourse on workflow-based pedagogy and highlights the need for a context-sensitive curriculum model that aligns technical skills with interpretive and ethical dimensions of journalism. The results underscore the importance of designing collaborative, modular, and locally grounded educational frameworks to strengthen data journalism capacity in the Indonesian context.

Ranting as Rhetorically Responsive Social Actions on Sports-Talk Radio: A Critical Discursive Approach
Article
This study uses a critical discourse analytic approach to examine the use of rants by callers on a prominent sports-talk radio show. Rather than being simply invective or contentious forms of social interaction, the findings show that rants are typically carefully constructed social actions that often use disclaimers to manage strong epistemic stances regarding knowledge of both the sporting events and sports culture. Rants are often created in opposition to other caller’s comments, making them rhetorically responsive. Rants also generally solicited intersubjective affiliation from the talk show host and displayed carefully crafted, accountable identities that reflect stylistic forms of communication and cultural norms. The up-close, discursive orientation reveals the multifunctionality of ranting in sports-talk radio interactions.
Voices on the Air: Speech Education and Campus Radio in the Postcolonial Philippine University
Article
In the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, faculty and students of the newly organized Department of Speech and Drama (later Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts) at the University of the Philippines (UP) were at the forefront of managing the radio station DZUP, mounting radio productions on campus and shaping the academic curricula for classes in radio speech and writing. These pioneering contributions, though significant, have yet to receive due documentation from communication scholars, researchers, and historians in the country.
In this essay, I address this gap by bringing into focus archival documents—photographs, newspaper accounts, official memos, and personal correspondences between academics and administrators—that clarify the academic department’s role in the early systems and operations of DZUP. I argue that these efforts are important because of four main reasons. First, they highlight the often-overlooked relationship between speech education and campus radio in the national university. Second, they emphasize the ways in which the radio booth worked alongside the public speaking platform and the theatre stage as a fundamental space where speech-related pedagogies, performances, and practices played out. Third, they show disciplinary genealogy that links the disciplines of speech communication and mass communication in the University of the Philippines. And finally, they shed light on the pedagogical process involved in teaching, training, and transforming Filipino students into a kind of speaking subjects in the postcolonial Philippines.
