Bridging the Gap: Designing a Contextual Data Journalism Curriculum for Indonesian Media Education
Article
Abstract
This study addresses the growing demand for data journalism education in Indonesia, where the integration of data-driven practices into journalism curricula remains fragmented and underdeveloped. The research aims to identify key gaps in the instructional design, content, and pedagogical approaches related to data journalism, with particular attention to the contextual challenges faced by journalism educators, students, and practitioners. Employing a qualitative exploratory approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with journalists and educators, focus group discussions with key stakeholders, and document analysis of accredited journalism programs. The findings reveal systemic shortcomings across all stages of the data journalism workflow, including limited access to usable data, lack of training in data cleaning and analysis, weak narrative construction, and minimal engagement with visualization tools. These gaps are compounded by institutional constraints and cultural perceptions that marginalize technical competencies in journalism education. The study contributes to the theoretical discourse on workflow-based pedagogy and highlights the need for a context-sensitive curriculum model that aligns technical skills with interpretive and ethical dimensions of journalism. The results underscore the importance of designing collaborative, modular, and locally grounded educational frameworks to strengthen data journalism capacity in the Indonesian context.

Cinema and Second Person Knowing: The Presence of a Fictional Other and the Truth of Our Self
Article
This is a philosophical study of non-narrative, slice of life films favored by Filipino, independent, social realist directors. It will focus on the works of Brilliante Mendoza and explain why his works have been well received despite their unconventional story telling style. By using Eleanor Stump’s second person knowing and the conception of self as kapwa articulated in Filipino philosophy, it will explore how the slice of life films allow the viewer to deeply reflect on existential situations because these films allow the viewer to dwell on the life experiences and lived worlds of others, and in that way gain a deep knowledge of experiences that challenge human becoming. By reflecting on the experiences of the kapwa (or the other self as theorized by Alejo, Mercado, and de Guia) that are presented by the film, the viewer is given the chance to contemplate the lives of others and imagine their possibilities for authentic human being in the world.
Ang Liga ay Buháy: Ang Pagtatagpo ng Teleserye at Anime sa Barangay 143
Article
Abstract
Countless animé series have been aired in the Philippines whether “Tagalized”, in its original Japanese language, or its English translation. However, it was only in 2018 that Barangay 143, the first animé series produced by Filipinos, aired on free TV in the country. Anticipation on this show was heavily manifested because for the first time, our own culture will be featured in a popular form among the youth and the Pinoys’ fascination with basketball will also be shown. However, one of the most popular comments and criticisms about the said anime was its adherence to the formula of Philippine television drama, the Pinoy teleserye. Aside from the exploration of some basic definitions of teleserye and anime, this paper analyzed possible reasons why Barangay 143 was considered a teleserye and examined how anime characteristics were used to adapt it to the experience and taste of Filipino viewers.
Panalo Nating Lahat [This is a Victory for us All]: Uncovering Constructs of Language and Nationalism in Social Media Reactions to Alex Eala’s Post-US Open Juniors Championship Interview
Article
Filipina tennis player Alex Eala won the US Open Juniors 2022 title, marking a first for the Philippines. She spoke in Filipino for much of her post-match interview, with no translators on hand, which is rare for international matches that broadcast to wide audiences. Online reactions to the event were of interest from the view of language and national identity. Bottom-Up Framing was used to inductively analyze social media comments on Eala’s speech. The researcher found that commenters constructed Eala’s post-match interview as a test of Filipino identity, and abstracted their sentiments to include other public appearances of other Filipino sports celebrities, such as Manny Pacquiao. English speakers were mocked for being awkward, while Filipino speakers were praised for being both humble and proud of their language. A performance of Filipinoness was equated with nationalism, and language became an object to be displayed rather than purveyor of meaning and culture. These findings have implications for studies of national identity in sports, and for how we understand the role of social media in facilitating discussions that construct and enforce the image of an authentic Filipino.
A Communication Approach Towards Decent Work Measurement: The Case of Filipina Gig Workers Using Online Platforms
Article
This paper proposes the use of a communication approach to decent work measurement, arguing on (1) the interdisciplinary nature of decent work, (2) the mediated aspect of gig work using platforms, and (3) the use of a communicative lens to center the experiences of women in the Global South. As a communication theory, Dutta’s Culture-Centered Approach (CCA) tenets—culture, structure, and agency—were applied to the narratives on working aspirations (i.e., opportunities, social protection, adequate working time and workload, meaningful remuneration, and health and safety) of Filipina gig workers using online platforms. With the goal of empirical saturation, in-depth interviews were conducted among thirty-two informants, including those involved in transactional transfer work in major delivery services, local delivery services, and independent work through social media. The online platforms included applications by major transport and delivery service providers in the Philippines (i.e., Grab, Angkas, Joyride, Lalamove) and those that use social media platforms, particularly Facebook and Facebook Messenger. Findings reveal rich and gendered work experiences on working aspirations. These narratives were then translated into decent work measures.
